Specifically, the fallout from COVID-19 has resulted in (i) a shortage of the shipping containers that ship cargo, (ii) a spike in demand for steel (iii) too few ships and dock workers, (iv) a shortage of truck drivers, (v) an increase in gasoline prices, and (vi) an increase in key solar panel components such as polysilicon, all of which have caused an increase in shipping cost as well as significant shipping delays. Additionally, city-wide shutdowns in Asian export hubs have halted the manufacturing of various components and raw materials for months.” <a href="https://pv-magazine-usa.com/2022/03/16/making-sense-of-solar-supply-chain-issues/"> -PV Magazine</a>‍Just one of these factors alone could cause uncertainty in the industry. The effect all these factors have together is next level. At those power stations, they are burned to heat up water. The steam from the water causes a significant increase in pressure, which forces a turbine to spin.&nbsp;‍The turbine is connected to a large magnet inside a generator. As the magnet spins, electrons are produced and the grid receives electricity.‍So what’s the problem with using steam to move a magnet? The problem comes from Hydrocarbons, also known as fossil fuels. When hydrocarbons are burned in the presence of oxygen they release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. You can see the chemical reaction layed out below.‍CH4 &nbsp; +&nbsp; 2O2&nbsp; &nbsp; → &nbsp; CO2 &nbsp; +&nbsp; 2H2O‍Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps heat in the atmosphere. Can going solar prevent wildfires?

<div class="blog-post-rich-text w-richtext">Remember catching a glimpse of 2015 in “Back to the Future 2”? We’re kind of doing that to 2050- but with much more accuracy. No, we’re not talking about auto-sizing jackets, Mr. Fusions, or multiple ties… however, we’re first in line for floating hoverboards. Instead, we’re talking about solar.‍In September of 2021, the Office of Energy Efficiency &amp; Renewable Energy released a <a href="https://www.energy.gov/eere/solar/solar-futures-study">Solar Futures Study</a>. That study showed that by 2050, as much as 45% of electricity in the grid could come from solar.‍Here are some key items to point out from that study:‍Executive summary… simplified-Dramatic improvements to solar technology have enabled rapid growth in the industry and are providing cost-effective options for clean energy. The Solar Futures Study explores the role of solar in “decarbonizing” the grid through 2050.‍By using state-of-the-art modeling, the study created three potential scenarios and observed the impacts each scenario had.&nbsp;‍The first scenario, “reference”, followed what would happen if we continued with the current state and federal policies and had no other major pushes for decarbonization.&nbsp;&nbsp;‍The second scenario, “decarb”, studied a future where there was an even greater push to decarbonize the grid. The policies put in place would have an end goal of 100% carbonization reduction by 2050.‍The third scenario, “decarb+E”, goes a step further than “decarb” by including large-scale electrification of buildings, transportation, and industrial processes. In this scenario, electricity demand grows by about 30% from 2020 to 2035, and an additional 34% from 2035to 2050. By 2050, all these electrified sectors are powered by clean (zero-carbon) electricity.‍The findings… simplified-In the “reference” scenario, where there was no additional push to switch to clean energy, they still saw solar increase by a factor of 7.&nbsp;<figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-center"><div><img src="https://assets-global.website-files.com/61e5db79c6648a52d903e710/62c7310adaf2a668edde065c_jBvXobovrWlSQLXmSOxNGftQ14pwIvm82WO08jG8j2yoObpAooJsy-MmuXHzCIVbTRvyX1RdIkCS7axmCXDKFZspTadpRCJ0Q-iw4JI3XRXAxZQ73lRvEeanvhNdozEHsJAHAgYq2XZnof3WsU8.png" alt=""></div></figure>‍This increase caused carbonization to drop by 45% in the year 2035 and 61% in the year 2050. The most important thing to note; this scenario portrays the least amount of change. That means that the worst-case scenario is that solar only grows by more than 700% in the next 30 years.‍Even though the “reference” scenario shows promising numbers, it still isn’t enough. In 2015, the United States signed the Paris Agreement (Liu and Raftery 2021). This agreement set a target to keep the global temperature rise below 2°C. As the largest source of cumulative carbon emissions and the second-largest annual emitter, the US is not likely to meet its target on its current trajectory.‍“To help remedy this situation, the Biden Administration has set the ambitious goals of decarbonizing the U.S. electricity grid by 2035 and shifting the nation onto an irreversible path to a 100% clean-energy economy, reaching net-zero emissions by 2050—while strengthening the American economy, creating well-paying domestic jobs, conserving natural resources, and ensuring that the benefits and costs of the clean energy transition are equitably distributed. Reaching these goals will require transitioning existing fossil-fuel-based power plants to zero-carbon energy sources. The result would be an unprecedented transformation of the grid and broader energy system over the next few decades—a challenging, but achievable, task.” - US Department of Energy‍The goals set by the Biden Administration tell us that the second and third scenarios are a much more likely future than the first. Particularly in the last decade, technological innovations and cost reductions in PV have consistently outperformed expert projections. Technological, economic, and geopolitical factors have driven a steep decline in PV costs in recent years.“In 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office set an ambitious target for an 80% reduction in the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for utility-scale solar by 2020, a target that was met 3 years early. Now, DOE has established a new target… This target calls for PV LCOE from about $46/MWh in 2020 to $20/MWh in 2030.” - Department of Energy‍The scenarios in this study follow cost and performance trajectories consistent with the 2030 LCOE target. Even without considering the history of solar meeting cost goals years in advance, solar electricity is the most inexpensive and sturdy foundation of a clean grid.‍Conclusion:The future is solar. No matter which scenario proves true, solar has a big part to play. As proven time and time again, solar technology will continue to become better and cheaper. Solar Panel Insurance... how does it work?

<div class="blog-post-rich-text w-richtext">Hometown to Facebook, Menlo Park, is taking a big step in its Climate Action Plan of carbon neutrality by 2030. What is this big step? They’re “turning buildings into Teslas” as BlocPower founder, Donnel Baird, puts it. Now, what does that mean?‍Menlo Park, California, made a deal with New York company, BlocPower, to decarbonize 95% of its buildings by 2030. They will accomplish this by replacing the city’s fossil-fuel infrastructure with climate-friendly heat pumps, solar panels, and electric car chargers.‍“Climate technology firm BlocPower and the City of Menlo Park have signed a public-private partnership to undertake building electrification across the Menlo Park community in the San Francisco Bay region of northern California.” - <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/green">BloombergGreen</a>‍This isn’t the first decarbonizing project BlocPower has undertaken. In the past, they have focused on low-income communities. Last year, they even partnered with Ithaca, New York to decarbonize some of its buildings.‍To accomplish the goals outlined in the Climate Action Plan, they must convert more than 10,000 buildings. They will start by electrifying 15 buildings this year and 10 in 2023. In 2024, the project takes off by planning to electrify 1,000 or more buildings each year.‍What does electrifying entail? EV charging stations, battery storage, solar and heat pump water heaters to name a few. Because the city’s grid is already working hard to keep up with demand, they will have to generate much more clean energy to keep up with the needs of the project.‍How will they generate that much electricity? Solar, of course! BlocPower is planning to leverage equipment supplier relationships to lower costs as the program scales and ensure access to project financing. They are also working with Menlo Spark, a local non-profit organization, to raise as much as $35 million to reduce costs for low-to-moderate-income homes.‍“I’m extremely excited about what the BlocPower partnership can do for Menlo Park,” said Mayor Betsy Nash. She isn’t the only one looking forward to this undertaking.&nbsp;‍State Senator Josh Becker said, “I support this effort and look forward to using lessons learned from this program to inform the broader policy landscape of building electrification.”‍The impact of this project doesn’t stop at 10,000 buildings. It’s opening doors for lower-income areas to gain access to solar as well as flood the solar industry with more competitive pricing. 10,000 buildings electrified in California.

In September 2020, they released the third edition of <a href="https://generation180.org/brighter-future-2020/">Brighter Future; A Study on Solar in U.S. Schools</a>. This is the most comprehensive study on solar at K-12 schools nationwide. They found that more that 7,300 schools had already made the switch to solar. A decision not only great for the environment but also for their budgets.‍“As school districts struggle to adapt to a nationwide budget crisis brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak, many K-12 schools are shoring up budgets with a switch to solar power.” - <a href="https://generation180.org/">Generation 180</a>‍Batesville School District in Arkansas is a great example of how solar can improve the quality of schools.‍In 2017, out of the five districts in their county, they were paying the lowest salaries to their teachers and couldn’t retain their staff. At the time, their utilities cost over $600,000 annually.‍They partnered with Entegrity, an energy services company, to install 759 kW of solar on their campuses. They also started an initiative with teachers to conserve energy and earn raises. Since installing the 1,483 solar panels, the district has saved nearly $100,000 every year. By using solar and conserving energy, they anticipate a $4 million savings over 20 years.‍With the money they have saved from installing solar, they have given pay raises as high as $9,000 a year to their employees.‍“Thanks to this project and other strategic cost reductions, the district went from a $250,000 budget deficit to a $1.8 million surplus within three years. Before you go solar in 2022…

<div class="blog-post-rich-text w-richtext">We’ve reviewed the steps from contracts signed to panels generating power, but what if your system needs some extra work to get to PTO? Let’s review what an MPU is and what you can expect!‍MPU stands for main panel upgrade, which is exactly what the name entails. If the current main panel on your home is outdated or too small to handle your solar system size, you will need an MPU.&nbsp;‍An MPU requires involvement from your utility, the contractor, and your city. Once the panels are on and inspected, we can apply for a permit from the city for the MPU. When we have the permit, our contractor schedules a time with you and your utility to come and install the MPU. The utility will come, turn off the power to your home, our contractors will make the upgrade, the work will be inspected, and the power will be turned back on. Once this is complete, you will be back on the standard track to PTO.‍Because an MPU requires many schedules to line up, it’s hard to determine how long it will delay your progress. Our team is happy to help!‍<h3>Q - If solar is so good, why doesn’t everyone have it?</h3>‍<h3>A - Great question! We think there are three main reasons why you won't find panels on every home:</h3>‍<ol role="list"><li>There aren’t aware of the financing options that work best for their needs.</li><li>Their property doesn’t receive enough sunlight (too many trees).</li><li>Other companies have left a bad taste in their mouth.</li></ol>‍The truth is, not everyone qualifies for solar. For example, if you don’t have enough unshaded roof space or property to generate enough power to offset your electricity bills, then going solar wouldn’t be a smart thing to do.&nbsp;‍Fortunately for our environment and for our economy, there are millions of Americans who do qualify for solar and who already run their homes on sunshine. Millions more are planning to get a solar system installed this year.‍However, there are also a lot of homeowners who could qualify for solar and all its benefits but have not taken the time to investigate going solar or they’ve already had a negative experience with a different company and never looked back.‍Because of Frugll’s access to the best financing options, you can get a larger system for a better price to offset some of the reasons you may feel that you don’t qualify. FAQ Friday: If solar is so good, why doesn’t everyone have it?

<div class="blog-post-rich-text w-richtext">You may have seen solar climbing its way to headlines in political news. But why? Solar panels, among many other imports, are monitored closely by the United States Government. Everything from the materials they’re made of to how they’re manufactured is taken into consideration when considering the guidelines they should fall under.‍The recent controversy on solar tariffs stems from Chinese manufactured cells. In 2012 and 2015, the U.S. placed its first and second set of tariffs on Chinese cells and modules due to unfair trade practices. After the tariffs were placed, Chinese companies began manufacturing their low-cost cells and modules in neighboring countries that did not have the same duties (tariffs). Even though the panels were marked as imports from those neighboring countries, most of the material used to make cells and modules was coming from China.‍In 2018, the U.S. government put in place the Section 201 tariff. This tariff gave domestic solar panel manufacturers great opportunity for production by temporarily slowing down the competition- much lower-cost panels imported from China and its neighboring countries.‍“The duties began at 30 percent on most imported modules, decreasing 5 percent each year until 2022, when the rate dropped to 15 percent. PV cells were also subject to these duties, but the first 2.5 gigawatts of imported cells were exempt to allow companies that assemble modules some relief while encouraging PV cell manufacturing in the U.S.‍“Modules produced from cadmium telluride, rather than crystalline silicon, were also exempt, and in 2019 bifacial modules — designed with a clear backing so that energy is produced when light hits the front or the back of the panel — also became exempt. Both are used primarily for large solar farms.‍-Greenbiz‍However, the tariffs were not successful. Because Section 201 tariffs did not apply to the first 2.5 gigawatts of imported cells, a the cap was never reached and, nearly all cells bought in the U.S. have been free of Section 201 tariffs. The production of domestic solar panels did not increase.‍The tariffs were also less effective because they were put in place during a period when PV module prices were already falling. So, while there was a general run-up in price when the tariffs were first proposed, U.S. panel prices have since trended downward and are lower than before the tariffs took effect, although they remain above global average prices. In fact, more solar capacity was installed in the U.S. during the Section 201 tariffs than at any other time in history, in large part because of the low cost.‍Not only were the tariffs unsuccessful in increasing domestic production, Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) also claims that the U.S. would have installed 11 percent more solar, employed 62,000 more people, and had $19 billion more in investment without the tariffs.&nbsp;‍“Most U.S. solar jobs are associated with building projects, not manufacturing equipment, and developers have said the higher prices forced them to delay or cancel solar projects. At the end of 2020, of 231,000 U.S. solar jobs, only 31,000, 13 percent, were in manufacturing.” - Greenbiz‍In late March of 2022, just after Section 201 tariffs had decreased to 20%, the Department of Commerce opened an investigation into solar imports from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam (CMTV). The investigation began after suspicions of circumventing the existing antidumping and countervailing tariffs on imports of solar cells and modules from China.‍These types of investigations happen when the Department of Commerce finds that “imported merchandise was sold in the U.S. at an unfairly low or subsidized price, to level the playing field for U.S. companies injured by these unfair trade practices, CBP (Customs Border Protection) is responsible for collecting the Antidumping and Countervailing Duties (AD/CVD) in a timely manner.” - CBP‍In simpler terms, high taxes (aka tariffs) are applied to imported products that are significantly cheaper than domestic products to keep American manufacturers on somewhat level playing grounds. It appears that China and its neighboring countries found a way around these taxes and are now being investigated to determine what is true. During the investigation, the high tariffs are being placed on the imported products.‍Due to these tariffs being applied to crucial solar products, the U.S. solar industry had its lowest quarter of installations since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Price increases and supply chain constraints continued to suppress the solar market as the industry installed 24% less solar capacity than Q1 2021. Over the last nine months, 2022 forecasts have been cut in half due to continued supply chain challenges and the anti-circumvention inquiry.‍The White House recently took action to provide a two-year suspension of any new solar tariffs gives businesses certainty to accelerate projects delayed by the Department of Commerce’s anti-circumvention investigation. Without this action, massive project delays and cancellations would have continued throughout 2022, putting President Biden’s climate goals at risk.‍“The solar industry is facing multiple challenges that are slowing America’s clean energy progress, but this week’s action from the Biden administration provides a jolt of certainty businesses need to keep projects moving and create jobs,” said SEIA president and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper. “President Biden has clearly taken notice of how drags on the industry are hampering grid resiliency. By acting decisively, this administration is breathing new life into the clean energy sector, while positioning the U.S. to be a global solar manufacturing leader.”‍This resolution shows us just how important clean energy is to the current administration. It gives us great certainty that the cost and speed of solar projects are top of mind for law makers and they will do what is necessary to keep the industry growing. The Consortium includes US solar development companies like AES Corp., Clearway Energy Group, Cypress Creek Renewables, and DE Shaw Renewable Investments.‍The 7 gigawatts of solar modules created per year from this investment could power nearly 1.3 million homes. That is a huge step in the right direction for Administration's goal to enable more than 3.3 million homes to switch to clean solar energy each year.‍“I think we have to play a big role in this energy independence and security for the U.S." - Leonardo Moreno, President, AES Clean Energy. Considering the Consortium, put together by AES under his direction, is offering to buy more than a quarter of what the U.S. installed last year- annually- speaks shows that he’s ready to put his money where his mouth is.‍"With our large and growing pipeline of solar projects, AES is fully committed to accelerating America's transition to clean energy," said Andrés Gluski, CEO, AES Clean Energy. "Today, some of America's top solar developers have come together to do our part to help attract investments into US solar manufacturing. People just like you.‍Solar jobs are growing at over ten times the rate of the overall U.S. economy. These solar jobs include a large range of responsibilities. From installation crews to salespeople to corporate and administration positions, it’s no wonder that it’s created 139,972 jobs since 2010.‍Unfortunately, the industry saw a slight decrease in jobs during the pandemic. From 2019 to 2020, we saw a 6.7% drop- mainly due to the restrictions placed by federal and local authorities. The drop also increased labor productivity in all three market segments, up 19% in the residential sector, 2% in the non-residential sector and 32% in the utility-scale sector. Even with the decline in jobs, the less labor-intensive utility-scale installations contributed to a record amount of solar energy production in 2020.‍“The solar industry continues to support hundreds of thousands of jobs across all 50 states, and even during a pandemic, our companies largely were able to keep workers on the job,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of SEIA. “We now have an opportunity to quadruple our workforce, adding diversity and supporting underserved communities by taking policy steps that incentivize solar and storage deployment and provide long-term certainty for solar businesses.”‍The Solar Jobs Census is a report that counts workers who spend a majority of their time on solar-related work. The latest report shows that installation and construction-related jobs continued to be the largest segment in the industry, representing 67% of all jobs. Workers in manufacturing jobs represented 14% of all American industry employment, while sales and distribution and operations and maintenance represented 11%. The remaining 4% is comprised of the “other” category. This includes workers in fields like finance, legal, research, advocacy, and communications.‍The latest report also showed an increase in solar workforce diversity. “Across nearly every demographic category [diversity increased], including workers identifying as “female,” which now represent 30% of the solar workforce. Representation among women and minority demographic groups has improved significantly since 2015, including a 39% increase for women, 92% increase for Hispanic or Latino workers, 18% increase for Asian American and Pacific Islander workers, and a 73% increase for Black or African American workers.” - SEIA‍Solar occupations also earn wages comparable to or better than those same occupation types in other industries. For example, when comparing pay for positions such as construction managers, electricians, and installers, wages for solar workers continue to beat other industry averages.‍The solar industry also continues to outpace the rest of the economy in its employment of veterans. Veterans represent 8.7% of the solar workforce, compared to 5.7% in the overall economy.‍When the results from the last census returned, lawmakers were in the midst of debating infrastructure spending that could boost the solar workforce by hundreds of thousands of jobs. “SEIA analysis shows that the solar industry will need to reach more than 900,000 workers to reach President Biden’s 2035 clean energy target. SEIA is advocating for policies that will grow clean energy deployment and lay the groundwork to hire and train those workers.” -SEIA‍What does that mean for you? At first, the car’s creaters weren’t planning to design a solar-powered car. They just wanted an efficient car. They found that solar power was the most efficient way to power a car’s moter with only a 10% loss of energy. In gas vehicles, only about 12 to 30 percent of gasoline fuel goes toward moving the vehicle. The rest of the energy is lost with heat in the engine and wind resistance at the wheels. The efficient design of the car makes it possible to go more than just a few miles using energy powered by its PV cells. If they were to put the same technology on a standard, 4-wheel car model, the car would need panels the size of a semi truck to make a normal commute.Even though there’s a long way to go with PV technology on cars, there are already great solutions for powering an electric or hybrid car with stationary solar panels. You can qualify for the ITC for the tax year that your panels started generating electricity.‍What does it take to qualify for the federal tax credit?‍“You can qualify for the ITC as long as your solar system is new or being used for the first time between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2023. Bonus - they generally don’t reduce your federal tax credits.‍Several states (and Puerto Rico) offer solar incentives on top of the federal ITC to encourage homeowners to install solar. Each state has different incentives but some common forms of these incentives are tax credits, rebates, and renewable energy certificates. California, Texas, Minnesota, and New York, all have high incentive amounts.‍State Government Rebates‍“Some states offer upfront rebates for installing a solar power system. They are typically only available for a limited time while funds are available, so research rebates in your state to get in on the incentive before it runs out. Last week, we explained how a solar panel creates energy and the other parts of a solar system work together to deliver that power to your home. If you missed last week's post, you can check it out here!‍To understand solar batteries, you first need to understand that there are two types of energy running through a solar system;&nbsp;<ol role="list"><li>DC (direct-current) - DC energy only flows in one direction. This is the type of electrical current generated by the solar panels on your roof and stored by a solar battery.&nbsp;</li><li>AC (alternating-current) - AC energy can flow in both directions. This is the type of electrical current used on the grid and by most things in your home.</li></ol>‍Because most of the devices and appliances in your home use AC energy, the DV energy created by your panels must be converted before entering your home. This is accomplished with an inverter. The way that batteries and inverters work together can look different ways. The two most common ways are DC coupled systems and AC coupled systems.‍Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each system type:&nbsp;‍DC-Coupled SystemsA DC-coupled system connects you to the grid in the same place it connects to your solar panels. This requires a hybrid inverter so that it can supply both your battery- which stores DC energy- and the grid- which transports AC energy- at the same time.‍Pros:<ol role="list"><li>Less energy is lost because your power is only converted from AC to DC once</li><li>If your DC-coupled system is below 10kW and produces excess energy, it may be eligible for credits with Net Energy Metering (NEM)</li><li>It requires fewer parts and can potentially cost less</li></ol>‍Cons:‍<ol role="list"><li>If you already have a PV system in place, it is more expensive to install a DC-coupled battery system as opposed to an AC-coupled system.&nbsp;</li></ol>‍AC-Coupled SystemsAn AC-coupled system uses two inverters, one that charges your solar batter and one that converts energy for your home and the grid.‍Pros:<ol role="list"><li>More flexibility — since AC-coupled systems require two or more inverters, you can adjust the location of your batteries and other equipment</li><li>Works with all kinds of inverters</li><li>It’s a more cost-effective option if you already have a PV system</li></ol>‍Cons:<ol role="list"><li>Slightly lower efficiency to charge your solar battery due to multiple conversions</li><li>More equipment means potential for more points of failure and replacement parts needed</li></ol>‍Besides having different amounts of inverters, and conversions, what’s the difference between the two kinds of battery systems? Here is a step-by-step breakdown of what happens with a DC-coupled system:‍<ol role="list"><li>Sunlight hits the solar panels and the energy is converted to DC electricity.</li><li>The electricity enters the battery and is stored as DC electricity.</li><li>The DC electricity then leaves the battery and enters an inverter to be converted into AC electricity the home can use.</li></ol>‍The process is slightly different with an AC-coupled system:‍<ol role="list"><li>Sunlight hits the solar panels and the energy is converted to DC electricity.</li><li>The electricity enters the inverter to be converted into AC electricity the home can use.</li><li>Excess electricity then flows through another inverter to change back into DC electricity that can be stored for later.</li><li>If the house needs to use the energy stored in the battery, that electricity must flow through the inverter again to become AC electricity.</li></ol>‍As you can see, including a solar battery in your system- either AC-coupled or DC-coupled- is a great way to become energy independent. However, it can make powering your home with solar more complicated. You have more equipment to worry about and you may lose some energy efficiency.&nbsp;‍When considering adding a battery to your system, first consider if the benefits outweigh the additional cost that a battery brings. For example, do you have access to a NEM program? If so, you may be better off using the credits you generate to power your home when your panels aren’t producing enough, like at night. This is especially true if you have low-producing winter months. It’s called photovoltaic technology, more commonly known as PV. A single PV device is known as a cell, which is typically small and produces about 1 to 2 watts of energy. The solar panels on your roof are made up of multiple cells and other materials, like glass and plastic, to help those cells withstand the weather. The silicon material at the cell’s core separates electrons from the atoms. Those electrons then move around the cell creating DC energy. If you’re producing more power than you’re using, the excess energy will either be sent to the grid or batteries tied into your system. The future is solar.</h2>‍ The average cost for solar panels has dropped by 70% in the last 8 years. “Markets for solar energy are maturing rapidly around the country since solar electricity is now economically competitive with conventional energy sources in most states.” - energy.gov So what does that mean for you? This report is called the World Energy Outlook (WEO). Let’s turn to your utility bill for the answer.‍At the bottom of your bill, you may see a line item called “Fuel Cost Adjustment” (FCA) or “Energy Cost Adjustment” (ECA). What does that line item mean? From month to month, the cost of generating power changes. Instead of constantly adjusting your rate to cover their costs, utility companies add this to your bill instead.‍Don’t see it as a separate line item? Some utility companies simply add it to your overall kWh.&nbsp;‍This change of cost is caused by one main factor, the price of fuel.&nbsp; Some of your electricity is generated by burning coal or natural gas, and the cost of these fuels change on a monthly basis. The railroads have also increased the costs of delivering coal to power plants through diesel-fuel adders and high natural gas prices. As a result, you are paying more for electricity to cover these changes.‍To put it simply; when fuel prices rise, it costs more to generate electricity… which raises costs for your utility company. Then, you owe more on your bill to cover those costs.‍So what can you do to avoid all these extra charges? FAQ Friday: 5 FAQs About Solar

<div class="blog-post-rich-text w-richtext">You may have heard the phrase “You can get paid to go solar” in Rhode Island. When sales reps refer to getting paid to go solar they are referencing one of National Grid’s incentives called the “Renewable Energy Growth” program where National Grid will pay you for either 15 or 20 years at a fixed rate for energy you generate with solar panels that you own. When explained properly the program is quite simple and has a very straightforward financial outcome but is not as rewarding as the more traditional net metering program, here’s why.. Net Metering is where you get $1 of credit against your electric bill for every $1 of electricity that you generate with your solar panels. The reason this is powerful is that the cost of energy goes up on average 4% per year, which means that the value of your solar energy goes up 4% per year. Net Metering also has a 25-year minimum grandfathering clause so you know that this value is established for a full 25-years (the warrantied period of your solar system). The Renewable Energy Growth program is only guaranteed for the 15 to 20 year period that you&nbsp; choose and the value is fixed for the term. This has a few major pitfalls; 1) You can’t apply for both net metering AND the renewable energy growth program so when your 15 to 20 year term ends you could likely be stuck with a solar system on your roof that gives you NO credit for the energy you export to the grid. So if you chose a long-term financing option (25-years is the most common loan term in solar today), then you’d have 10 years of loan payments left, plus you’d have a big electricity bill and you’d no longer receive any credit. Contrast that with the net metering program. You are guaranteed to get 100% full retail value for all energy generated by your solar system for the full 25-years, even if the cost of electricity were to triple or quadruple (which we have seen in some utilities over the past 25-years). To give an example, a customer with a $200 electric bill is expected to spend approximately $100k on electricity over 25-years based on the 4% average annual utility increase. Under net metering the solar system would therefore provide $100k in value to the homeowner.&nbsp; In contrast, under the current buyback rate under the Renewable Energy Growth program the value to the homeowner for their solar energy would only be $46k.&nbsp; In summary, there are a lot of unknown variables that make the renewable energy growth program difficult to predict beyond the incentive term. Net Metering is a tried and true program that guarantees long-term value to the homeowner and protects them from the volatility of fluctuating electricity prices. </div>

Electric vehicles are also more popular and lower-end models are becoming available. What does that mean?
